University of Oregon’s Radio Station Highlights Underrepresented Artists in the Music Industry

Eugene, Ore. – KWVA 88.1 FM, the University of Oregon’s first student-run radio station, is attacking radio norms by revolutionizing the landscape with its music, which mixes alternative rock and underappreciated artists. This push started with Demitri Kritsepis, one of KWVA’s most dedicated DJs, and has brought audio diversity to the University of Oregon’s campus.

KWVA feels a duty to showcase music that many never get the chance to appreciate. The station takes pride in its diverse selection of emerging artists and distinct songs that built the industry. They strive to present an alternative to the dominating top ten songs the usual radio station plays.

“We at KWVA strive to challenge our listeners with a new horizon of musical variety,” said Demitri Kritsepis, KWVA DJ and Junior at the University of Oregon. “Pushing the boundaries of auditorial comfort for our listeners is a major goal when DJing.”

While KWVA is known as the University of Oregon’s radio station, its expansion into online streaming has allowed national access to the DJ sets coming out of the radio station. The online access gives Alumni and music lovers the chance to experience the musical output coming from UO.

KWVA has been a consistent contributor to the University Of Oregon’s musical culture since 1993. Since its humble beginnings, the station has been up and running 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

“The station has been a great way to expand my music literacy,” said John Karn, a University of Oregon senior. “I always enjoy hopping on and seeing the different approaches the DJs take when playing music and communicating to the audience.”

With the aggressive transition of KWVA’s musical approach, the station has seen an increase in viewership of 20%. The station has also seen great results through its use of more controversial songs and artists.

The station thrives on its diverse DJ compilation throughout the day, with some days having 30 DJs contributing to the daily musical rotation.

“Diversifying the DJs helps create variety for our listeners,” said Kayla Krueger, DJ director. “Listeners have different tastes, and not everyone is going to like every DJ, so having such a big variety of them is a great way to satisfy our audience.”

KWVA thrives on community involvement with local artists, guest speakers, and athletes. More often than not, weekly, new guests are presented by various DJs to share their experiences and views or simply add more entertainment value to the radio show.

KWVA invites everyone to check into their 24/7 radio station at 88.1 FM to experience the rich depths of the musical field and meet the unique twists our DJs add. Whether you’re new to University or Oregon or just a local community member trying to find an exciting new music station, take a break with our handmade and thought-provoking tracks. All music lovers seeking a break from the norm of music should experience this auditorial adventure.
